Glazed ceramic dish by Menelika, Suisse, circa 1950

REF: 8049

Oval glazed earthenware dish made by Poterie d'art Menelika in Geneva, circa 1950.

With its oval, slightly hollowed shape, the dish features a dark glaze enriched with a stylised bird decoration in green, yellow and white tones. The free, almost pictorial treatment of the motif belongs to Menelika's poetic vocabulary, defined by deliberate naivety, lively subjects and great decorative freedom.

Founded in Geneva in 1924 by Hélène Imbert-Amoudruz and Charles Imbert, Poterie d'art Menelika contributed to the renewal of Swiss ceramics between the wars and after 1945. The atelier closed in 1960.
